Calling All Lower Voices: Why Mixed Choirs Need Tenors, Baritones, and Basses Now

Something’s missing in choirs today: the rich, resonant sound of lower voices. Tenors, baritones, and basses—the voices that give a mixed choir its depth and soul—aren’t turning up like they used to. At Vocal Sounds, we’re on a mission to change that. We need singers with lower ranges, no matter how you identify, to bring your voice and make our music whole.
In a mixed choir, lower voices are the magic. They’re the thunder rolling through Skyfall’s cinematic sweep, the heartbeat driving Joyful Joyful’s gospel energy, the warm foundation beneath Tears in Heaven’s quiet beauty. Without tenors soaring just below the top and baritones and basses anchoring the bottom, the sound feels thin—like a song half-sung. Mixed choirs thrive on balance, and right now, it’s tipping. Lower voices are needed more than ever to keep the harmony alive.
Here’s the best part: you don’t need experience—just a voice that loves to sing low. Vocal Sounds is a growing Monton choir with a passion for music that moves, and we’re looking for tenors, baritones, and basses to join the fun. You’ll feel the power of those deep notes, the buzz of blending with others, and the thrill of lifting our sound to new heights. We’re kicking off summer term with a FREE Taster Rehearsal on Thursday, 24th April, 8:00–10:00 PM at Monton Unitarian Church Hall—our first step toward a big concert later this summer.
No auditions, no pressure—just come sing. Sign up at vocalsounds.co.uk or simply drop in. Know a tenor, baritone, or bass who’s been holding back? Send this their way! Let’s get lower voices back in the choir where they belong—raising the roof with Vocal Sounds.
